So, that makes it an official flower of Gemini. People born under this star sign often get a lily of the valley.

From early records (it was the flower of Hera, the Greek moon goddess) it has been the symbol of purity and was accordingly readily adopted by the Church to associate the Virgin Mary's sanctity with events of. As Ash prepares to battle Conway in his third-round match, it’s obvious that the two Trainers have very different battle styles—Conway relies on his predictive powers to formulate his battle strategy, while Ash loves an action-packed, head-to-head event!

Ash’s first Pokémon is Noctowl, and Conway has chosen his Shuckle. Using the Power Trick move, Conway switches Shuckle’s Attack and Defense, turning its amazing defensive power into some seriously hard hits. Noctowl proves how strong it is and gets right up after one of these powerful punches, but Ash decides that this is a good time to switch Pokémon, so he brings out his Donphan. Soon after, he then switches Donphan out for Gible, and Gible’s fondness for biting turns out to be quite an advantage. Not only that, but Gible has finally mastered the elusive Draco Meteor, and uses it to defeat Shuckle!

Conway sends out Lickilicky, but not for long. Ash switches out Gible for Noctowl again, who defeats Lickilicky without much effort. Then Conway brings out his Dusknoir, who immediately uses Trick Room to put Ash’s speedy Pokémon at a disadvantage. Dusknoir knocks out Noctowl in a single hit, and Ash puts Donphan back into action, but Dusknoir defeats it as well, leaving Ash with only one Pokémon...

Ash brings out Gible one last time, and after a few well-placed bites, it defeats Conway’s Dusknoir with another powerful Draco Meteor, which gives Ash his third-round victory!

The matchups are then posted for the quarterfinals, and Ash finds out that he’ll be paired up against his rival Paul! So we leave our heroes just as Ash receives his old friend Gliscor from Professor Oak...

Plot

With the third round of the Lily of the Valley Conference approaching, Ash takes the chance to get in some training with his Infernape against Brock's Sudowoodo. Ash tells Infernape to use Flame Wheel while Sudowoodo blocks the attack. Ash orders Infernape to use Flame Wheel again, but this Flame Wheel is larger than usual as Infernape has learned a new move, Flare Blitz! With its new move, Infernape uses Flare Blitz against Sudowoodo, crashing through Sudowoodo’s defense. Barry comes along and is amazed by the Flare Blitz. Although it is powerful, Brock warns Ash not to overuse Flare Blitz as it deals serious recoil damage.

Barry asks if Ash is training for a match against Paul but Ash reminds him that he still needs to beat Conway first. This leads Barry to ask if Ash is going with Infernape, Torterra, and Glalie for the day's match. Dawn, however, isn't too sure if brute force is enough to beat Conway. They all fail to realize though that Conway is hiding behind a tree and he takes mental notes on what Pokémon Ash will be using against him and prepares his strategy.

Before the battle between Ash and Conway starts, a Tangrowth renders a Hippowdon to be unable to battle, thus concluding the fifth match of round three. Meanwhile, Team Rocket is selling snacks in the stadium and see ChampionCynthia. They manage to attract her over, and while she decides on whether to get a sandwich or an ice cream, her presence is able to attract several other customers and thus boosting Team Rocket's business.

The three-on-three battle between Ash and Conway finally starts and will be taking place on a grass battlefield. Conway chooses Shuckle as his first Pokémon and Dawn takes the chance to scan Shuckle with her Pokédex. Meanwhile, Ash chooses Noctowl, making Conway realize his analysis results may be wrong. Barry surprised to notice that Ash's Noctowl is a Shiny Pokémon. Conway starts things off by having Shuckle Withdraw into its shell. Ash orders Noctowl to use Sky Attack, while Conway continues to boost Shuckle's defensive stats. Noctowl swoops down to attack, but Shuckle's defense sends Noctowl flying back. Shuckle then uses Power Trick to switch its defense for a heightened attack stat. Noctowl then approaches with Air Slash and Shuckle counters using Gyro Ball, which is able to break through the Air Slash and knock Noctowl out of the sky. While Noctowl stands up again, Ash recalls it.

Ash then sends out Donphan. Shuckle uses Sludge Bomb but Donphan counters with Rollout, rendering Sludge Bomb useless. Conway then tells Shuckle to use Gyro Ball again. Gyro Ball hits and causes Donphan to lose control and crash. As a result, Ash recalls Donphan. Brock notes that Donphan's attack is only half as effective if it ever gets deflected and wonders if Ash switched Donphan because of a strategy change.

For Ash's third Pokémon, Ash sends out Gible. Conway notes that Gible had not yet mastered Draco Meteor. Conway has Shuckle use Gyro Ball. Ash uses Gible's habit of biting things to his advantage, and it manages to catch Shuckle in its mouth. To counter, Conway tells Shuckle to use Sludge Bomb in Gible's mouth. Gible is hardly happy about this. With no other choice, Ash tells Gible to spit Shuckle out but Gible has other things in mind as it prepares a Draco Meteor. Shuckle is heaved into the air with a now-mastered Draco Meteor. Shuckle crashes to the ground and is rendered unconscious. Conway recalls Shuckle and thanks it because he now knows which three Pokémon Ash will be using for this battle.

For his second Pokémon, Conway sends out Lickilicky. Ash tells Gible to use Dragon Pulse but Lickilicky uses Lick before Dragon Pulse has the chance to be fired. Gible is treated to a thorough licking while the audience shivers at this disturbing sight. Ash tells Gible to escape by using Dig. Lickilicky counters with Power Whip, which reverberates across the battlefield and throws Gible into the air. Before Conway can call any more attacks, Ash recalls Gible and sends out Noctowl once more. Conway orders Lickilicky to use Power Whip once more but its tongue proves to be too short to reach Noctowl’s altitude. Noctowl then uses Air Slash, which hits Lickilicky right in the face. Lickilicky then uses Thunderbolt but Noctowl quickly dodges the otherwise super-effective attack. Noctowl uses Extrasensory to lift Lickilicky into the air and then throws it down to render it unable to battle.

With only one Pokémon left, Conway sends out his Dusknoir and orders Trick Room. Ash tells Noctowl to use Extrasensory but Dusknoir suddenly appears behind it and throws a Thunder Punch. The attack hits and Noctowl is rendered unable to battle. Ash is confused as to what happened and Conway explains that Trick Rooms allows the slower Pokémon to go first. Because Ash's Noctowl, Donphan, and Gible are all faster than Dusknoir, the latter will always be the first one to attack. Brock notes that although Ash seemed to be having the advantage, it was actually all happening according to Conway's plan. Next, Ash sends out Donphan once more. Ash tells Donphan to use Rollout but Dusknoir strikes first with a powerful Shadow Punch. This leaves Donphan unable to get back up. Ash tries to switch Donphan out but Dusknoir uses Mean Look to trap Donphan on the battlefield. Dusknoir uses Shadow Punch again and knocks Donphan out.

With two down, Ash has no choice but to send out Gible again. Trick Room, however, is still in effect. Conway is aware of Gible mastering Draco Meteor now, but claims it won't work this time. Ash tells Gible to use Dig but Dusknoir's Shadow Punch is able to hit before Gible can escape. As a result, Gible is hurdled into the ground. Gible then aligns itself under Dusknoir while in the ground and shoots straight up. Dusknoir is ordered to use Shadow Punch once more and reappears behind Gible. Ash then tells Gible to turn around and bite the Shadow Punch. Gible bites Dusknoir's hand and, as Conway remarks in absolute surprise and shock, eats Shadow Punch. Dusknoir tries to shake Gible off but Gible uses Draco Meteor to shoot Dusknoir into the sky. Dusknoir lands but is still able to battle. Ash tells Gible to use Dragon Pulse but Dusknoir's Shadow Punch strikes first again. Gible, however, hangs strong and releases its Dragon Pulse, which hits Dusknoir straight in the face and knocks Dusknoir out. With all three of his Pokémon unable to battle, Conway loses the battle and Ash is now able to advance to the next round. While Ash and his friends cheer, Conway notes that this was the least calculated battle he ever had but at least he gained a new method of battling.

Valley

The board then randomizes the next set of battles for the Top 8 contestants and Ash is revealed to be facing Paul next. Tobias has also made it to the quarterfinals.

Afterwards, Ash's winning trio are rewarded with some Pokémon food for the efforts. Paul arrives on the scene. Pikachu and Paul's Electivire issue a challenge with each other while Cynthia watches them from the balconies, as she looks forward to the battle between the two long-time rivals. Later, Ash contacts Professor Oak, who has just transferred Buizel across to Ash. Just then, Dawn calls Ash outside of the Pokémon Center, telling him that his last Pokémon has arrived - a shadow appears across the moon as Ash's Gliscor makes its return.

Trivia

Noctowl emerging from its Poké Ball
  • The scene in which Ash's Gliscor made its entrance is somewhat similar to the scene in which it evolved in Fighting Fear with Fear!, exactly one hundred episodes ago.
    • It is also similar to Charizard's return for the Battle Factory in Numero Uno Articuno!.
  • Music from Pokémon Heroes and Giratina and the Sky Warrior was used in this episode.
  • Aim to Be a Pokémon Master 2001 is played during the battle between Gible and Dusknoir.
  • A new effect is used in this episode when Noctowl is sent out of its Poké Ball. Due to Noctowl being a Shiny Pokémon, previously when it was sent out it was accompanied by a few white sparkles. However, as sparkles are now standard whenever any Pokémon is sent out from a Poké Ball, Noctowl is instead surrounded by two rings made up of bright yellow sparkles.
  • This is the first time the term 'Shiny' is used in the anime.
  • Jessie's Wobbuffet doesn't appear in this episode.
  • This episode marks the final appearance of Conway.

Errors

  • In the scene right before Ash commands Infernape to use Flame Wheel, Glalie's mouth is deformed and the black part of its bottom lip is missing.
  • When the referee declares Donphan unable to battle, his shirt collar is yellow instead of black.
  • When Dusknoir hits the ground as it is defeated, the colors of its iris and pupil are swapped.
  • When Ash is speaking to Professor Oak at the end of the episode, Oak asks Ash if he is waiting for his third Pokémon, but his upcoming battle with Paul is a full six-on-six battle.
  • In the Polishdub, after using Trick Room, Dawn states that Gible looks like it is in a cage, despite Noctowl being on the battlefield.
Dragon Ash Lily Of The Valley
  • The referee's collar error

  • Dusknoir's eye error

Dub edits

  • Aim to Be a Pokémon Master 2001 was replaced with This is the Moment, the same song that played during Dawn and Zoey's match during the Sinnoh Grand Festival in A Grand Fight for Winning!.
  • In the Hindi dub, instead of uttering the move's name, Extrasensory, Ash just commands Noctowl to 'lift up and slam' Lickilicky onto the ground.
  • In the original Japanese version, Brock says Infernape forgot Flame Wheel in order to learn Flare Blitz. In the English dub, he says Infernape used Flare Blitz instead of Flame Wheel, without saying anything about Infernape forgetting Flame Wheel.
  • In the original Japanese version, Cynthia decides between getting sandwiches, ice cream, and onigiri. In the English dub, she only mentions sandwiches and ice cream.
  • In the English dub, the Coin Toss Poketch app is used to determine who brings out their Pokémon first. In the original Japanese version, they just use a coin or object for the coin toss.
  • In the English dub, Barry says Noctowl is a Shiny Pokémon. In the original Japanese version, he only says it is a different color.
  • In the English dub, Conway thinks Gible has now mastered Draco Meteor since Ash chose it. In the original Japanese version, he thinks Gible hasn't mastered Draco Meteor and that the battle will therefore be easy.

Dragon Ash Lily Of The Valley Nursery

The first quarterfinal battle of the Sinnoh League at Lily Of The Valley Island has Ash pitted against his rival Paul. This round is a full battle, with each side using a full party of six Pokémon. As Ash switches out his first three Pokémon—Pikachu, Infernape, and Staraptor—there’s something quite familiar about it to Paul. In fact, Ash appears to be using the same Pokémon team he used in their first full battle at Lake Acuity! Paul begins the battle with Aggron, then Gastrodon, and brings his Drapion out after the first two are quickly defeated.

Watching the battle on television, Paul’s brother Reggie notices that Paul is well aware of Ash’s strategies. Reggie is convinced that Paul allowed Ash to take the first two wins as part of his overall plan!

After Ash switches Staraptor out for Buizel, Drapion catches Buizel in its pincer tail! We leave the scene with Ash screaming at Buizel to “get out of there!”—and as the action gets more and more intense, we have no choice but to wonder how this incredible match will ultimately play out!

Plot

Determined to settle their long-standing rivalry once and for all, Ash and Paul are set to face off in the first quarterfinals showdown of the Lily of the Valley Conference. Ash decides to begin with Pikachu, and Paul orders out his first Pokémon, Aggron.

Prior to the match, Ash gets some last-minute training with Gliscor, who recently returned from its training session with Air Battle Master McCann. Gliscor practices Giga Impact in a session against Dawn's Mamoswine while Barry watches on. Reflecting on his Full Battle against Paul at Lake Acuity, Ash remarks that Paul takes everything he has learned in battle and uses it to his advantage. Barry claims Ash does the same thing, but Ash replies that he still needs to look at everything he has been through while on his journey. Barry asks if he figured it out, but Ash says that he will just have to wait until the battle, much to Barry's frustration.

Dragon Ash Lily Of Da Valley 歌詞

Meanwhile, Paul talks to his older brother Reggie via videophone about his upcoming battle with Ash. Dawn enters the Pokémon Center lobby looking for her friends, but she quickly ducks out of sight. Reggie regrets not being able to be there, but Paul understands that he cannot just drop his work responsibilities. Reggie asks Paul if he wants to reconsider which Pokémon he'll be taking into the match, but Paul confirms he's satisfied with his lineup. Reggie notes how glad he is that Paul met Ash, as he knows that no other trainer has influenced his brother as much. Reggie then advises Paul to not underestimate Ash, but to power through the battle and win. Paul thanks Reggie and ends the call, then discovers Dawn eavesdropping and as they walk outside, Paul confesses his main problem with Ash - his talk about bringing out a Pokémon's inner strength and how any Pokémon has the potential to be strong reminds him a lot of Reggie. Dawn points out to Paul that Ash and Reggie are different people. Everyone soon meets outside. Paul then prepares to leave, but abruptly stops when Dawn utters Cynthia's quote back at Amity Square, 'When every life meets another life, something will be born'. She is left wandering what that 'something' might be, but hopes the quarterfinals might shed some light. Paul tells Ash that he will see him on the battlefield to which Ash agrees.

Returning to the present, Paul begins by having Aggron use Metal Claw, and Ash has Pikachu counter with Iron Tail. Though the two Steel-typemoves cancel each other out. Paul then tells Aggron to use Metal Sound, a high-frequency that lowers Pikachu’s special defense. Ash instructs Pikachu to use Thunderbolt to stop Aggron's attack, and Pikachu manages to pull it off, stopping Aggron as well as causing a little damage. Pikachu then uses Volt Tackle, speeding towards Aggron. Paul counters with Aggron's Flash Cannon, hitting Pikachu and sending him flying, rolling back onto his feet. Ash knows Pikachu is struggling and decides to substitute with Infernape. Cynthia recognizes Infernape as the Chimchar she once battled while Team Rocket are excited to see Infernape battle, having had a soft spot for it since the Tag Battle Tournament. Paul tells Aggron to use Double-Edge while Ash tells Infernape to counter with Flare Blitz. The two powerful and dangerous attacks collide. The two are sent backwards, and Infernape suffers from the recoil. Unfortunately, Aggron has the Rock Head Ability which cancels out the normal recoil from Double-Edge... but luckily for Ash, it turns out that Aggron has suffered burns from Flare Blitz. Ash then instructs Infernape to use Mach Punch, and Paul orders Aggron to use Flash Cannon, but Infernape lands the fast Mach Punch before Aggron can fire, sending Aggron flying into the wall behind Paul and crushing the surface on impact. When the smoke clears it is unable to battle, giving Ash the lead.

Paul then sends out his Gastrodon and Ash calls back Infernape and sends out Staraptor. Gastrodon begins with Muddy Water and Staraptor uses Quick Attack and connects. Surprisingly, Gastrodon continues using Muddy Water, circling its head above its body to create a Counter Shield, a technique adapted from Ash, and clips Staraptor. Ash instructs Staraptor to dive down and use Aerial Ace, though Gastrodon counterattacks with Body Slam, pinning Staraptor to the field with its soft body. Gastrodon uses Water Pulse aimed at the sky, and the move picks up speed as it descends. Ash realizes that Gastrodon will jump away at the last second, giving no time for Staraptor to dodge it. Just when all seems lost, Ash has Staraptor use Close Combat on the battlfield, lifting him up, which knocks off Gastrodon and he escapes the Water Pulse. Paul orders Gastrodon use Ice Beam, bringing the in-flight Staraptor to a screeching halt and crashing onto the field. Ash decides that he will have to recall Staraptor for later and change his strategy.

Ash sends out Buizel. At this point, Paul points out that what Ash is doing is too predictable now. He knows Ash is just trying to get rid of all the frustration his Pokémon felt from that loss back at Lake Acuity into his advantage here which is why he brought them all back for this battle. Ash states he is correct and that this is all what his Pokémon want. Gastrodon uses Ice Beam again and Buizel approaches with Aqua Jet, turning it into Ice Aqua Jet. The combination narrowly misses its mark as Gastrodon launches into the air and then goes for Body Slam. Ash thinks quickly and instructs Buizel to meet the attack with Ice Punch, causing Gastrodon to faint.

Ash settles himself, adjusting his cap and knows that the hard part of the battle has only just begun. At home in Veilstone City, Reggie watches the broadcast, wondering if Ash figured out that Paul had planned to sacrifice Aggron and Gastrodon all along in the first place. If not, he will need to do so right away. Meanwhile, Paul sends out Drapion and attacks with Pin Missile, which Buizel cancels out with a Water Gun Counter Shield technique. Drapion then uses Cross Poison, which Buizel dodges by sliding behind Drapion. Buizel uses Sonic Boom on Drapion's back, though Drapion blocks the attack with its tail. Drapion grabs Buizel with its tail, twisting around its torso to menace the struggling Buizel with its pincers. Ash realizes that Drapion has no blind spots and calls for Buizel to escape Drapion's grasp.

Trivia

Dragon Ash Lily Of The Valleys

Barry's pose
  • Oración and music from Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea and Giratina and the Sky Warrior are used as the background music in this episode.
  • After seeing Ash's Gliscor fight Dawn's Mamoswine, Barry does a pose similar to the pose of Gligarman from The Superhero Secret.
  • The episode's English dub title is a reference to the idiom 'familiarity breeds contempt'.

Errors

  • In the original Japanese version, when Aggron uses Metal Sound on Pikachu, Brock says that Metal Sound lowers an opponent's Defense, although it actually lowers Special Defense. This was corrected in the dub.
  • When Buizel is preparing his Ice Aqua Jet, his mouth is orange instead of tan.
  • When Buizel is in his Ice Aqua Jet, the two stripes on his back are missing.
  • When Buizel hits Gastrodon with Ice Punch, the lower part of Gastrodon's mouth is green instead of blue.
  • After Gastrodon is knocked out, the middle part of its head is colored the same as the lower half of its body.

Dub edits

  • In the English dub, Ash says his upcoming battle with Paul feels like the battle at Lake Acuity, and that Paul's Pokémon were so strong. In the original Japanese version, he says he is nervous about the battle, and the nervousness is what reminds him of the feelings he felt during the battle at Lake Acuity.
  • In the English dub, Dawn says Piplup looks handsome in its cheerleading outfit. In the original Japanese version, she says Piplup looks cool in the outfit.
  • In the English dub, Paul tells Dawn that he doesn't like Ash, as he always talks about friendship and trust like his brother Reggie always does. In the original Japanese version, Paul says that he didn't like Ash, showing that he has grown to respect Ash.
  • In the original Japanese version, Ash is heard calling out Infernape to battle. Due to there being no eyecatches, this line is absent from the English dub.
  • In the original Japanese version, when Ash is telling Buizel to get quickly out of Drapion's grasp, there is an echo effect, which is removed in the English dub.
